As I was born in Sweden where religion doesn't really exist other than from the immigrants, I have to say no. I'm an atheist so I don't believe in anything that you can predict. If you want to know the future, then wait for it. I mean, how could the Maya have more power than we have now to predict the future? Isn't it proved that the human brain and what it's capable of doing is evolving for every newborn child? The reason why so much people believe in it is because of the famous quote: "You'll probably believe the hundred people telling lies instead of the single person telling the truth." Of course, it's more a matter of being religious or not in most cases. Religious people will probably believe in this more as they believe in many things that the human can't prove. But I will have that as unsaid as I'm not trying to offend anyone and I could very well be wrong.

I completely agree, but there is one thing that I'm scared about. We were talking about this is in my History class last year, and I think it was NASA that was recieving letters from random people saying that they were gonna kill themselves and their kids before it happened. So, although I don't think that the end of the world is anytime soon, I think that 2012 will bring a wave of mass suicide

Committing suicide before "the end of the world" isn't exactly uncommon. Religion is supposed to give you faith for a better future and self-confidence as God smiles upon you no matter what you've done; that little extra that will help you pull through whatever obstacle ahead of you, not make you believe in the world's end and that there's no escape from it. I respect the religious people who thinks their God is a nice and kind one and doesn't go around and tell everyone it isn't good to be an atheist, not those who think he's gonna kill you if you do wrong and evolves to Al'Qaida and such. It's usually the latter that takes their own lives before God is going to "kill" them.

No, I don't believe in such fictitious claims. The Mayans only foretold 2012 as the furthest date in their calendar. They could've halted it for various reasons, but people are just assuming that the end of an ancient calendar means the end of time. I'm agnostic, so I don't believe in an "official" Armageddon day (Such as the Christians believing May 21 was the day the world was going to end). The world will end when it's time to end. No one will know. Despite all this, there will be chaos and anarchy on that day in 2012. There is a large chunk of religious people that take to heart the claims of "Doomsday". I would expect Mass suicides, street riots, burglary, and demoralization. I may not believe the world will end in 2012, but something hectic will occur regardless of anything.
Also, I find it strange that this particular post is my 1221st post.

The universe made it so :O Well, me being a Christian, I don't think it will happen because doesn't it say somewhere in the Bible that no one will know? So how can people just say it's going to happen, then? It could happen in five minutes for all we know, even when religion is factored out. The Mayans could have ended their calendar there for something simple that people overlook. They're humans; they get lazy, they do stupid things, even though you can't picture it. They could have been thinking that since it's so far ahead, when they get closer they'll continue; like me, I put stuff off until it gets close to the date. Maybe they just didn't want to finish. Or ... MAYBE THEY RAN OUT OF STONE. OR THEY COULD BE TROLLING US. But of course, I'm only 14, I'm not very good at coming up with valid or reasonable explanations Just for the lulz I'm going to come outside on December 21 next year and record everything. Then blast "Still Alive" from Portal.

Wasn't it also a possibility that the guy who was supposed to set us in an age by figuring out when Jesus died, counted wrong? I'm pretty sure I've heard that in school from one of my teachers. Correct me if I'm wrong. So if that would be the case, we have actually no idea what age we're actually in. That would probably be the next excuse they use after they realize we're not dying on their "predicted" doomsday.

That's what I was thinking too. Like, they have a council meeting and they're like "Hey, we have to continue on this calendar that goes on forever." "Do we HAVE to? I'm sure that by the time they get to at least 1500, they will find a better way to make these things." "Yea, I quit." And now we supposedly have " Doomsday" lazy Mayans

I always thought that We could be in 2020 or something already or in even 3000-something. It could have passed long ago. Even so, like Freezeflame said, there will be people who will go mad regardless. Idiots who believed the May predictions quit jobs and left families believing that it wouldn't matter. The 2012 "Doomsday" is massively more believed, so I can only imagine how bad it will be on that date. They will die, they will steal, they will kill. And I will laugh.
