Technically, I never really put down the game: I just defeated ganondorf 67483237428109 times, collected all hearts, bugs, etc., and I did fishing. Yes, a lot of fishing.
If you mean by "first encounter of the ending" then over a year. Otherwise, I started a new file within hours
