True.
Direct copying I don't mind, but if you don't like that I can see what you me. Personally I let anyone use anything I make for anything without permission, because in the end it doesn't really matter. Copyright may prevent someone from direct copying but it also punishes those who think too much like someone else, which is ridiculous.

Mainly it's an issue of those who get permission and those who are too lazy to get permission.

How can you get permission to draw something you didn't even know existed?

If you didn't know it existed, then you are basically immune because you thought it up yourself and didn't copy an idea.

Another thing: as long as you don't make a profit from the image, a copy of a copyrighted image does not violate any copyright laws. So says my research.

Still, it's a matter of knowledge, if you didn't know it was out there you are basically thinking it up yourself, and what's the problem with that? You should get copyright on things you thought up on YOUR OWN.

The problem is that people who are thinking it up themselves are getting sued by the people who thought it up first. Even though they both though it up on their own. One can still sue the other because he/she thought it up first :\
