Genres.

Talked about this on irc a minute ago, so I thought I'd ask the rest of you what you think.

What are your views on dividing music into genres? I think that there is so much variation in music that giving it adjectives, e.g: 'hard', 'soft', 'heavy', is better than genres, I think that genres are more likely to encourage people to avoid music or bands that have been given a label the same as other music or bands they don't like, what do you all think?
