Recent Spambot Influx - REGISTRATION OPENED AGAIN KINDA

Postby Yitik » Fri Jan 28, 2011 2:41 am

EDIT: They just keep coming, so registration will be closed indefinitely. Hopefully not for more than a month. Just until the wave blows over. Sorry to all potential new members reading this; our IRC channel is still and will always be open, so why not head down there?

EDIT 2: We've opened registration again. What happens now is that when you register, until you have 10 posts, you are a "New Registered Member", which means you can only reply to topics already made by full users, or start your own topics in We Want Midna Back. Because introductions are important. Hopefully this helps things a bit :) .

***

People have been talking about spam for a while now, actually, and I didn't notice because the bots weren't actually posting. Well, they are, now, sometimes, and it turns out there are dozens of them registering every single day. It's really easy to clean them all out with one fell swoop, but it'd be great to be able to stop them registering in the first place. I'm working on that, so just hold your horses.

To admins, if you wanna help me out in the meantime, here's what you need to do:

1) See spambot.
2a) If it posted, administrate him, ban him by IP, then delete him and posts (all done via "Administrate User" in his profile).
2b) If it has not yet posted, you can ban him by IP and do all that, or you could just assume that tons of other spambots have also registered. Hit the ACP and click Users and Groups. Click Prune Users, and then prune everyone that has registered after a recent date (ie January 1) that have a post count equal to 0. Hit it, look over the names to make sure you did it right and aren't going to delete Emkay, then delete the bastards.

Thanks much to you, and also thanks to the members for their patience.

EDIT: I've updated the forum, and the bots are still coming hourly despite modified security. We are thus closing registration for an amount of time that likely will not exceed a month.

I just lol'd
But yeah, those spambots are really annoying. Is it possible to, like, make the signing in more complicated to stop this flood?

Captcha? If there wasn't one, then spambots would REALLY get into this easy. However, a captcha code is only good enough if there's a tight security under it. No amount of captcha would work if the spambot program figures out how to trick the system into thinking that it's an actual person.

This is war, my friends. And it ain't gonna be pretty.

I'm pretty sure there was one when I registered my account a couple of days ago. Maybe because the captcha was too weak the bots could easily bypass it? I've no idea..

I've been noticing those freaky spambots, they're either from the USA or Russia lol. I'm always like maybe this member will be good, but then they spam. So yeah I'm happy you guys are working to stop them ^_^

I think I noticed one that might have gotten through earlier. I recall seeing a 'Bing [Bot]' under the active users list, though presumed this might have (for whatever reason) had to do with the chat. Not sure what you could do it, but I hope this blows over soon. Glad I registered when I did.
